THE LIGHT OF OUR LIFE

Many years ago when our five children were very young, I read that if you put a lighted candle in the center of the dinner table it would have a calming effect and cause those around the table to draw toward the light and each other. This was just what I wanted, a close family centered on the 'light'. I find it interesting that God choose the metaphor of light to draw us toward Him.

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12

Who but God could make this statement? There are many who think they are smart and clever and have strong ideas for making a better world, but to claim you are the light of the world, never! However, we are given the opportunity to be a light in the world and have that magical "light of life."

There is a lot of darkness here on earth. I believe Jesus was not merely thinking of darkness as the absence of physical light. We have dark days when we struggle emotionally, when relationships are broken, anxiety steals our joy and we turn to medication, loved ones die, when lack of finances can literally have us sleeping on the street, or when our health is failing and we have constant pain.

I believe all experience darkness at some time in our life. And yet, we don't need to succumb to it if we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  I must repeat these words of Jesus because they are so unimaginable..."Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness." We look around us and say, this can't be true! But it is. This is a promise of the Lord and He never will break a promise.

Jesus points us to Himself, "I am the light of the world." He knows what we have to deal with, He knows our life, He designed our life for His intended purpose.

"You are of this world; I am not of this world" John 8:23

Could it be that the events in our life that we consider to be dark really are not? He who knows the beginning and end, has a perfect plan in place. We can't perceive our life through God's eyes, but through human eyes which give us a distorted perception.  Because, as believers, we are safe and secure in God's love, literally hidden in Christ (Colossians  3:3) when we follow His light we can't be destroyed, bruised and battered maybe, but never destroyed. We don't have a 'light' of our own, so we walk in God's light, dance in God's light, thrive in God's light. Amen?

Why do we have so many problems, confusion, and such anxiety in the first place? Could it be that Jesus uses all of this to draw us toward His light? I believe so. Open to the concordance in your Bible, or use your on-line device to search for the word light and write down some these verses so they become a part of your faith in Jesus.

Thank you Lord for showing us that we need to walk in your light - every time we encounter a roadblock we can kick it away knowing You, only You, are the Light of the world. Help us to stay in Your light and not wavier.
